Counter‑Height Bar Stool — Designed by Marc Spagnuolo

This counter‑height bar stool is based on a proven design by Marc Spagnuolo. It’s built for everyday use, with a focus on comfort, strength, and clean, modern lines.

Each stool is made in Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), chosen for its warm colour, tidy grain, and reliable durability. It ages well and holds up to regular use.

The hand‑woven seat is strong, supportive, and comfortable to sit on. A brass‑covered footrest adds a bit of protection and stops footwear from catching on the timber.

With simple curves, solid joinery, and a compact footprint, the stool fits easily into kitchens, breakfast bars, and open‑plan spaces without getting in the way.

It brings together quality materials, tidy detailing, and sound workmanship to create a stool that’s built to last.

Design created by The Wood Whisperer. Original plans available here.

  • Elegant Curves

The Counter‑Height Bar Stool is defined by its elegant, sculpted curves — each one shaped to bring out the natural beauty of the timber. The forms are first roughed out with careful, deliberate passes on the bandsaw, then refined on the router table before moving into the slow, precise work of hand‑shaping. Many components feature curves on parallel faces, turning the shaping process into a true exercise in planning and fine craftsmanship. Using a blend of rasps, hand tools, specialised machinery, and custom jigs, every surface is feathered smooth and matched across the stool. A gentle roundover softens the edges and creates subtle reveals between parts, adding depth, shadow lines, and a sense of quiet sophistication to the finished piece

  • Finished to Perfection

The Counter‑Height Bar Stool is finished in a careful, multi‑step process using a single hand‑applied coat of hard‑wax oil before the seat is woven. This finish bonds deeply with the wood fibres, giving the stool a natural sheen and long‑lasting protection without the harsh smell of volatile products. Depending on availability, I use premium oils such as Osmo, Rubio, or Armour Seal, allowing plenty of time for the oil to absorb before buffing it to an even, balanced glow. The brass footrest will gently tarnish with use — a purposeful patina that protects the timber beneath. Hard‑wax oils take up to seven days to fully cure, ensuring the stool reaches its full durability and beauty.

  • Beautiful Weaving

The seat is woven from high‑quality polypropylene strapping, chosen for its exceptional durability and minimal stretch — meaning it won’t sag over time and stands up well to everyday use. Because the material isn’t absorbent, spills wipe away easily and dirt doesn’t cling, keeping the seat looking fresh for years. Each strip is heat‑sealed at the ends to prevent fraying, then pulled taut and secured with staples in a precise over‑and‑under cross‑weave. Achieving the final pattern takes patience and careful, methodical craftsmanship, resulting in a seat that’s strong, supportive, and beautifully textured.

  • Quality Joinery

The Counter‑Height Bar Stool relies on carefully engineered joinery to achieve its clean, minimal structure. Key components are built using a rebated, nested glue‑up paired with precise slip mortise‑and‑tenon joints, cut using a specialist Domino joiner for strength and accuracy. This approach creates a rigid, long‑lasting frame without adding visual bulk. The brass footrest reinforces the most heavily used area of the stool, protecting the timber from constant wear while adding a refined accent to the overall design.

  • Consistant shapes and sizes

Each stool is shaped and assembled with precise, repeatable techniques, ensuring every curve, joint, and dimension matches perfectly. The result is a set of stools that are truly symmetrical and consistent, giving you a perfectly uniform collection that looks intentional and beautifully made.

  • Premium Hardwood Timber

Crafted from carefully selected premium‑grade timber, each stool is built from boards with minimal defects, ensuring durability and a refined, high‑end finish. The standard timber, Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), offers rich golden‑brown tones, subtle ribbon‑like grain contrasts between sap and heart wood, and a naturally elegant appearance. With moderate good durabilty and a fine, consistent texture, it rewards simple, regular care while bringing a sophisticated warmth to your home.
