If you’re keen to get composting, this single bay bin is a great place to start.

I build it from solid macrocarpa or H3.2 treated pine — both tough, rot-resistant, and ready to handle the weather. No assembly needed. You just place it and start chucking in your scraps.

It holds 512 litres, so there’s plenty of room for veggie peelings, garden clippings, coffee grounds — whatever you’ve got. The slatted sides keep air flowing, and if you want to keep things tidy, I’ve got optional lids to keep birds out and moisture in (your worms will thank you).

Size: 80cm × 80cm × 80cm — compact but plenty big enough to get the job done.

If you’ve got questions or want a custom setup, just flick me a message — I’m happy to help.

  • Getting Started with Composting

Each Peter & Son compost bin bay is crafted from solid wood (pine or macrocarpa) and measures 80cm x 80cm x 80cm. These high-quality composting systems help keep your compost tidy and contained, making them ideal for urban settings. Plus, the larger the bin, the faster your compost will decompose.

  • How to Compost

Alternate layers of green matter (food scraps, manure, fresh grass clippings, weeds without seeds, seaweed, tea leaves, coffee grounds) and brown matter (torn newspaper, cardboard, chopped tree prunings, dry leaves, untreated sawdust, wood ash, twigs). Aim for half green and half brown material.

  • Troubleshooting Your Compost

    • Too Wet: Add straw, twigs, or newspaper to balance the moisture. Use a lid to limit rain.
    • Too Dry: Use a lid, then sprinkle with water or add more green materials.
    • Smelly Compost: Remove the front slats and turn the compost with a spade.

Peter the mighty composter.

Bin. I brought my first 16 months ago and that is full. Leave for 12 months now I have my second. I love the bins, they are full of worms.
